While I'm not terribly fond of releasing statistics to the public (University R.A.P.E. Center Statistics are already open to the public), I feel they're a useful tool for rape activists because it counters the popular stance of college security departments of, "it doesn't happen here - here's our list of reports."
SU is in a unique position by having a rape crisis center on campus and well advertised to its students, and can be put in comparison to what the Department of Public Safety releases.
I have condensed the statistics further for brevity, and to protect the privacy of victims and friends.
During the academic year there were four "Official Reports": reports given to SU Security or the Syracuse (City) Police AND occur on campus property or on greek housing.
"Other" or Unoffical Reports cover a much broader scope: the assaults may have happened off-campus or out-of-town, before the survivor came to college or in high school. For one reason or another, the survivor chose not to bring the issue to security or the police, but rather use the counseling services of the University R.A.P.E. Center.
Even if the one unfounded report was not the first in years (it was), it still fits within the FBI Statistics that place false rape reports at lower than the national average for crimes.
